hello, there, friend,
i thought about your last letter for most of the day... thought about music and story and new love. i listened to 'alternative' rock for most of high school, depeche mode, new order, the smiths, love and rockets, the psychedelic furs, erasure. i couldn't get enough of the beat and sometimes the darkness.
when i met my now husband, who was four years older and who grew up in florida surfing, he couldn't believe my taste in music. he still doesn't like it. he grew up listening to jimmy buffet, lynyrd skynyrd, tom petty, neil young and the cars. most of it was music i hadn't really known before.
i remember driving around in his tiny red ford truck jamming the tape deck with tapes, listening to the world he grew up in. our early relationship was made in that truck. he would pick me up at the dorm or later apartment and we would drive. drive for a hike, drive to eat out, drive to talk about something heavy, drive to go camping...
and what ties all of it together is story. a good song tells a good story and takes you back to that part of your story - when you first heard it, where you were, what you were doing or thinking. i cannot for the life of me think of a song or two that really takes me back to our early dating, but you can bet i'll be listening to both some depeche mode and some tom petty today.
xo,
b
